Lismore - Heritage Town

Where the Past is Always Present

Lismore was the home of the Earls of Cork - most memorably the "Bachelor Duke" of Devonshire. In the early 1800's he was the richest man in England and he lavished his funds on Lismore Castle. You can visit the Castle's garden and grounds, or play a round of golf on the course which winds about its buttresses.

Lismore Castle

The Town of Lismore features a First Millenium Cathedral and the Old Courthouse has now become Lismore Heritage Centre, where you can experience the rich history of the town and its surroundings. So significant and relatively untouched is the town's historic fabric that the Irish nation has decreed Lismore a Heritage Town.

Just a mile down the road lie the wild gardens of Ballysaggartmore Towers. This is the most amazing gate house in Europe! The builder blew all his money on the entryway, and ended up living in a modest cottage.

There are a host of 18 and 9 hole Golf courses within a 25 mile radius, including the lovely 9 hole beneath the Castle that is only a three minute drive from Ballyrafter House.

Local Golf

Equestrian centres dot the landscape in this historic riding country. Most particularly, Ballyrafter Equestrian Centre is our next door neighbour. It features an Indoor riding centre for inclement weather or to practice your jumping skills. Cross country pony treks are also on offer.

Horse and Pony Trekking

And, of course, there's the finest salmon fishing river in all of Ireland and probably in Britain as well. Certainly, the 1998 rod catch was the highest of any Irish or UK river. We have three fishing pages packed with information about fishing along the River Blackwater.
